Sky's story
We focus on local adoptions to families near Minneapolis, MN or Fargo, ND, as this is where our volunteers are located, and a home visit to your home is part of the approval process. Sky is fostered in the Fargo, ND area.
One look in those big brown eyes, and you'll see why Sky needs no words to express his gratitude to a new forever family. If you are looking for a handsome, smart and devoted canine friend, look no further!
Sky is a friendly Sheltie boy with a quick tail wag and a big heart. He is approximately 12 years old. Sky is hard of hearing and this smart boy has learned some basic pup sign language. Don't be nervous about being able to communicate with this lovable guy - Sky is extremely intuitive and good at reading human facial expressions and body language. He is smart as a whip and disagrees wholeheartedly with the myth that "...you can't teach an old dog new tricks". This sweet, mature boy is eager to learn new things, especially when tasty, low calorie treats are involved! Sky has a never-ending smile on his handsome face.
Sky is an amiable, easygoing dog who adjusts quickly to other pets and people. He would appreciate another pet companion, or would be okay as your one and only. Although he admires those dogs who jog or play Frisbee with their humans, Sky prefers a leisurely stroll in the backyard, and following his people around the house. Long walks on the beach or sidewalk may be a thing of the past due to arthritis, but he's more than happy to accompany you when you're working in the flowerbed or doing chores in the house. Sky is so easy to care for; a soft bed, a kind word, a good meal, and your love will make him the happiest Sheltie boy in the world. Sky weighs around 40 pounds. He has discovered that Kong toys stuffed with peanut butter are the best thing since sliced bread!
1. Because Sky likes to follow everyone from moment to moment, a home with few steps is best for him.
2. It is extremely important that Sky's weight is managed and that he does not get too many calories from treats or extra foodkeeping a healthy weight means he will be more comfortable dealing with his arthritis.
3. Sky seems comfortable around women and men. He is comfortable around children who are not overly active. He is definitely a herding dog and will try to herd children at play.
4. Sky had a visit with the dentist when he arrived at MNSR, and he had several teeth extracted. No hard toys or rawhides for him. We brush his teeth nightly.
Temperament: Sky is so happy and just wants to please his family. He is an easy going guy. Sky will lay quietly for grooming and nail trims as well as nightly leg massages (optional)
Fence: Sky is not a speed demon but a fenced yard means he can wander and explore at his leisure for short amounts of time. He cannot be off leash as he tends to wander---quickly.
Dogs: Sky gets along well with other dogs. Puppies can get on his nerves, but he doesnt mind them being curious. Sky seems like the kind of dog that would do best with another, older or calm dog in the home. He really seems to appreciate his foster sister. If people arent around, hes okay with that as long as he has his pal.
Cats: Sky has only been around cats that are indifferent to him. He seems to just ignore them, too.
Kids: There are no kids in his current foster home but he was more than happy to accept lots of pets and a few treats from children who met him at the pet supply store.
Crate-trained: Yes. We hesitate to keep him in the crate at home for any length of time as he may get stiff/sore.
Housetrained: Yes. Sky will bark when he has to go outside, and responds to the motion come when you want him to come inside.
Obedience training: Nothing formal that we know of. Currently we are teaching him sign language for sit down come and quiet.
Leash Manners: Skys leash manners are impeccable. Due to arthritis, he goes on short walks of about a quarter of a block at a time.
Car rides: He rides in a crate quietly.
Activity Level: Not athletically active. He does like to follow us everywhere around the house. He will do best in a home that provides him with time outside to explore at his own pace but not require daily walks.
Barking: Weve only seen him bark when we come home from work (happy attention bark) when he needs to potty and when he is hungry. He watches our neighbors come and go without a peep. He will bark for a very short period of time when his foster sister leaves him to go on a walk.

Health: Sky is on low cost thyroid medication and medication for arthritis, and has really increased his activity level since starting those medications. He is much more alert and a very happy boy. He sometimes wears braces for extra support and is very cooperative when we put those on. Those will be supplied to his forever home. Sky has had a thorough medical workup, including Xrays, diagnostics, blood work, dental with extractions, etc. as we do for all our senior dogs.
We were not hesitant at all to have a senior, deaf foster dog in the house. Sky uses his big, brown, beautiful eyes to watch every move we make and he takes many cues from his foster sister to learn proper doggy etiquette.
Sky's adoption fee is $150.00, and he is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on preventative (during heartworm season), had a complete senior profile with bloodwork, thyroid test and Xrays, had a dental with extractions, is microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc.
Please read our Adoption Guidelines prior to calling or emailing us, as this may answer your questions.
